Nr. 216 CUM

9-inch Comtoise rooster clock with verge escapement and lead pear-shaped pendulum. Half-hour and full-hour chime on a bell with repetition. Bowl-shaped enamel dial with arcade-style minute track "à la Dauphine." The Gallic rooster, combined with the three fleurs-de-lis, symbolized absolutism for decades. Now, it stands on a laurel wreath framing an empty dotted medallion. It is believed that the original three fleurs-de-lis were filed away during the Revolutionary period, leaving the medallion dotted and empty. The Gallic rooster associated with the three fleurs-de-lis was likely "guillotined." The guillotine did its work not only in public squares but also symbolically, as revolutionary opponents destroyed symbols of the monarchy. Many roosters lost their heads during this time. Later, the iconography of the rooster evolved, and it came to represent the vigilant French people.
