Massive oak longcase clock circa 1880/90 with carvings, 12-inch Comtoise clockwork with 3 weights and Grande Sonnerie, i.e., quarter striking on 3 bells. Pinwheel escapement (Amant), central seconds hand, date, and day of the week display, lyre pendulum with a pendulum lens of 37.5 cm diameter, and an ornate lyre bracket with monogram: Y + B.
Alabaster dial with applied enamel cartouches, signed: YBET A COUTANCES.
The base of the case features a large carved relief, with 3 books in front of rays, stars, a globe, and an open book titled: LE LIVRE D'HEURES.
Books of Hours were often splendidly designed devotional books for literate nobility. They contained prayers to be recited at three-hour intervals: at Prime (6:00 a.m.), Terce, Sext, None, Vespers, and Compline (9:00 p.m.).
