No. 572 CUM

11-inch Comtoise clock with verge escapement and folded pendulum, dating from around 1845. Two-part pressed decorative front plate depicting a flute player serenading his beloved. The groove separating the upper section from the decorative corners is only visible in rudimentary form, as parts of the depiction of the upper section extend far into the corners. Since this decorative front plate was mounted on an 11-inch cage, a separate pressing tool was required for the decorative front plate covering the lower half of the dial. Normally, the 11-inch cages were used for month-running clocks, which required a lower extension of the decorative front plate of approx. 3 cm. Cutting off the upper decorative corners for use as lower decorative corners was not possible with this model; consequently, there must have been a separate pressing tool for the lower corners. The tool for the one-piece pressing was manufactured directly with a lower extension, so that it could be used for 10- and 11-inch-high models by cutting off the lower extension. Such decorative front plate models, in which the depiction of the pediment grows into the corners and which required two pressing tools, are rare and presumably occur only in the period from 1843 to 1848 (the period of validity of the patent for the one-piece pressing of decorative front plates).
It became increasingly popular to install 8-day movements in 11-inch cages. Star-shaped hands with punctuated surfaces.
Half-hour and full-hour strike on bell with repetition of the hour strike. Strike release weight-driven. Star-shaped hands with chased surfaces. Alarm mechanism, wooden release disc in the movement on the hour wheel, rare alarm setting with two prongs, suitable for turning with two fingers.
