Comtoise rooster clock from the early years of the French Revolution. Verge escapement and lead pear-shaped pendulum, half-hour strike en passant, full-hour strike with repetition on a bell. Below the rooster, the symbol of the French people, the emblem features three hearts representing the Third Estate (le tiers état).
The entire clock face front is backed with brass, a style also known from early Mayet clocks and which regained popularity in the 1790s.
Domed enamel dial. The signature MAYET CADET A TOULOUSE recalls the most famous clockmaking family of the High Jura in the first half of the 18th century.
Tardy lists in his directory a Francois-Joseph MAYET cadet, ou le jeune. Toulouse 1778.
