Nr. 279 CUM
9-inch Haut Jura type Comtoise clock from around 1730, which originally featured a brass ring. The characteristic 4 small holes for attaching a brass ring are present in the mounting plate. Around 1740/45, this clock was modernized with the first large enamel dial, measuring 19 cm in diameter, originating from Le Locle. The verge escapement of this clock operates with a lead bob pendulum of extreme length, exceeding 200 cm. Early clocks generally feature pendulums of significant length.
This clock was used for an interesting experiment.
The pendulum suspension was lowered to the level of the upper cage plate, meaning that the coupling point—the connection between the pendulum and the escapement’s pendulum guide arm—was raised by more than 10 cm on the pendulum. The closer the coupling point is to the pendulum suspension, the greater the pendulum amplitude must become. However, the verge escapement of this clock could not achieve the necessary amplitude at such a great pendulum length, causing the pendulum to come to a stop. A very intriguing result regarding the Mayet legend about the origin of the first Comtoise clocks.
