Nr. 360 CUM
Comtoise rooster clock from the time of the French Revolution. Cast decorative piece featuring a rooster above an empty medallion, flanked by two upright foxes, symbolizing the nobility and the clergy. The common people, represented here by the rooster, had overthrown the nobility and clergy and are symbolically shown being besieged or threatened by them. Brass hearts in the corners of the clock dial and heart-shaped iron hands also symbolize the common people.
8-day movement with verge escapement. Half-hour and full-hour strike WITHOUT repetition, struck on a bell by the striking mechanism. Flat, bowl-like enamel dial with Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic numerals for the minutes.
- Dial diameter: 220
- Frame: 235 x 228 x 150 HxWxD
- Movement: 347 x 238 x 170 HxWxD
- Pendulum length: 1620
The iconography of the cast piece, the brass hearts, and the heart-shaped hands point to the Revolutionary period. However, the movement, with its frame size lacking strike repetition, and the dial type suggest a date around 1765/1770! This clock is indeed a mariage but was likely created during the French Revolution.
