Nr. 176 CUM
9-inch Comtoise clock movement with pinwheel escapement (amant) and folded pendulum, rear pendulum guidance, dating to around 1830. Half-hour and full-hour striking on a bell with repetition, striking on a bell. Two-piece decorative plate made of embossed brass sheet depicting the goddess of victory, Nike, standing on a crescent moon, holding a laurel wreath and a trumpet, crowned by a laurel wreath and flanked by palm leaves and cornucopias. This motif symbolizes victory over Turkey, as the Greek struggle for independence since 1821 culminated in 1830 with the rebirth of Greece as an independent state. Other events associated with the Turks, ingrained in French consciousness, also occurred around this time. In 1829, the 300th anniversary of the First Siege of Vienna (1529) was commemorated. In 1833, the 150th anniversary of the Second Siege of Vienna (1683) was observed. This motif was still found towards the late 1830s, though rarely, with the then-common elongated Roman numerals on clock dials.
