Nr. 304 CUM

10-Inch Comtoise Clock with Moon Phase Display in an Oval Decorative Plate. Pressed pendulum, anchor escapement, half-hour and full-hour strike on bell with repetition at the full hour. Date display, enamel dial signed: Taillardat à Doyel. Decorative plate by Paget marked: Ovale et Octagonale as well as Quadrillés 9 & 10.
The moon phase in the decorative plate is controlled via a lever system with a movable tip driven by the date display’s cam wheel. This construction is common in 19th-century English longcase clocks, but it is the first time I have seen it in a Comtoise clock. The moon scale 1–29 is enameled, while the moon disk is painted. The current painting was applied during restoration.
Engraved into the embossed backplate of the movement is: "Blanchet facteur 28 Mai 1892." The back of the oval decorative plate is inscribed: "Taillardat 4/27," suggesting that the clock was fully assembled before the decorative plate and pendulum were removed for painting. It is likely that numerous decorative plates and pendulums were painted by home workers, marked accordingly so they could later be reassigned to their respective clocks.
