Nr. 560 CUM (donation Nr. S 2 CUM / March 2025)

A 9-inch Comtoise CLOCK movement from the period between 1820/1840 with rear pendulum and ANCHOR ESCAPEMENT was used as the basis for this single-hand Comtoise with tin dial and sawn brass pediment, in order to feign an early Comtoise CLOCK of the 18th century. Frame height and width were reduced from about 25 cm each to 20.7 cm height, 15 cm width and 14 cm depth. The plates were shortened both at the bottom and at the top to about 20 cm, thus becoming rectangular without splayed feet. The great wheel of the striking train was moved forward on the axis, since both wheels no longer had space side by side. The engagement of the great wheel teeth in the pinion of the striking train star wheel thus became extremely small!! The change wheel on the great wheel arbor was replaced by a pinion for driving the manufactured hour wheel (saw-tooth gearing). The arbor for receiving the hour hand was soldered together from several brass-turned parts. Although a large pressure spring for the hour wheel is present, the hour hand cannot be turned by hand. Setting the hand to the desired time is impossible! The appearance fits, the function does not! The fly, rack and all other small parts are all elements typical of the 19th century.
The tin dial is old, but had already been mounted on another CLOCK. Old fixing holes were closed so that new ones could be drilled to fasten with the 4 small screws typical of early Comtoise CLOCKS under XII, III, IV and IX. The sawn brass pediment is also an antique part, but mounted on a new holder.
A CLOCK probably created in the 1980s, in order to sell it to unsuspecting customers as an early example of a single-hand CLOCK at the then high prices for this CLOCK type. In an auction catalogue in 2025 still offered at 900.00 euros.
