Nr. 563 CUM

10-inch Comtoise month clock from the time of the French Revolution. Cast decorative element with rooster over a medallion with 3 lilies, flanked by two upright foxes, representing on one side the nobility and on the other the clergy. The common people, here represented by the rooster, had on July 14, 1789, with the storming of the Bastille, deprived the absolute monarchy of the ancien régime of its power, but still lived in a constitutional kingdom, whose king, Louis XVI, had sworn the oath to the Constitution. The 3 lilies in the medallion are still a symbol of Bourbon rule, but the nobility and clergy besiege and threaten the actual new ruler, namely the people, from whom they want their power back. This cast ornamentation can therefore only have been made between 1789 and September 22, 1792, the day of the proclamation of the 1st Republic. A very similar cast decorative element with rooster and foxes can be found on clock Nr. 360 CUM, but there the medallion is empty and refers to the period of the Directoire (1795–1799).
