Nr. 331 CUM
9-inch Comtoise clock with verge escapement and folded pendulum from the period 1825/1830. Two-part embossed decorative plate featuring a sun face and ribbon above a goblet filled with flowers and fruits, flanked by cornucopias, palm leaves, and acanthus. Each of the four corners of the dial displays 8-petaled flowers. Half-hour striking en passant and full-hour striking on a bell with a 2-minute repetition. Remarkably, the striking mechanism construction deviates from the typical spring-loaded releases of the time, using a weight-driven release. Comparing this construction with the one patented by Auguste Girod around 1840 (see illustrations N° 205 CUM and N° 332 CUM), which he called a "perfected striking mechanism" (Sonnerie perfectionnée), it is evident that approximately 10 years earlier, another unknown Comtoise maker had already created a better and simpler construction. However, neither design gained widespread adoption.
