Nr. 275 CUM

10-inch Comtoise clock with anchor escapement, half-hour and full-hour strike on a bell with repetition, dating after 1870. The oval ornamental plate and the pressed pendulum depict an ensemble of French patriotism, addressing the loss of Alsace and the city of Strasbourg in 1870.

At the top of the oval ornamental plate, we see the image of a woman wearing the traditional ribbon bonnet of Alsace, adorned with a cockade, displayed on a shield in front of national flags. This motif is repeated at the bottom of the pendulum. In the center of the pressed pendulum, we see Mary with the child Jesus in her arms on another shield, representing the patron saint of Strasbourg. Unfortunately, only remnants of the original four-color painting remain. Blue, white, and red—the French national colors—dominate (flags and cockade), but we can also see a green laurel wreath on both the ornamental plate and the pendulum, symbolizing Alsace's belonging to France and simultaneously asserting the claim for its return.
